REVIEW: SUG SUPER4 BASKETBALL LEAGUE

The first ever S.U.G slam took place on Wednesday, the 3rd day of August, 2016, at the schools new basketball court. It started after the school activities ended for the day. The S.U.G slam involved 4 teams and they played a marathon league.

The league kicked off with DJ Chin Chin lightening the mood with good music. Each game was played in halves instead of the 4 quarters a standard basketball game has. There were 6 matches in all and we'll give you a load down of each game.

Four teams participated and thrilled the fans at the surprisely crowded basketball court. The Titans, captained by Atine, were set to show their reputation in their blue colour. The Spartans in red remained resolute about winning the competition, with the captain kolade in high spirit. The Hawks were always going to fly with their black jerseys everywhere, captained by Bynum. Dipo captained the Warlords who were going to fight all the way through to the finals in their white jerseys.

                            GAME 1
                  TITANS VS HAWKS
The game started with the jump ball, slammy for the Titans edged it and the first game kicked off at a very steady pace. Both teams were careful of conceding the first point, but it was the Titans that made the first basket of the day, with Mayor catching a long throw from Atine, running free to make the first two points.

It was going all Titans way, as they won the first free throw of the game, making one of two free throws. Bynum triedvshooting from outside the arc, he missed and slammy caught the rebound and countered, setting mayor through once again to make the basket. Bynum gets the first free throw for the Hawks but failed to the basket on both chances.

The first half was rounded up and it was all Titans making waves, while the Hawks were fluffing their chances. Henry rose to the occasion running into the arc before taking the consolation shot too earn the first two points for the Hawks just before the buzzer.

The second half started with the Hawks taking the Titans to the height where they couldnt compete. Bynum won two free throw from a defensive foul, he made 1 of the two throws. Slammy went free for the Titans  Buh missed his shot. Favour won two free throws but didn't make any basket.

Atine made a surprise run and made a two pointer shot from inside the arc. With less than 3 minutes remaining, it seemed all lost for the Hawks. Bynum did his magic again and made one of the free throw,  7-4 it was with 2 minutes to go. A fast counter saw Mayor through for the Titans only for him to travel.

The turn over saw the game turn over, as Bynum made the basket from inside the arc with a sublime shot. The Titans had their last chance to attack but the rebound was won by the ever present Anji for the Hawks, with seconds to go, Anji found Favour free, Favour made the 3-pointer buzzle beater, securing victory for the Hawks. 7-9 it ended.

                             GAME 2
              WARLORDS VS SPARTANS

Unlike the first game, the sound of the whistle was enough to fire this game up. It was the Spartans captain, kolade that had all the heat enough to fire up the game, he made the first two shots before any effort from the warlords. Bishop for the Warlords was not going to have it no more as he made the first two point for the lords, and before the end of the first half, bishop won two free throws off a defensive foul, he made both shots, making sure the half ended with both teams tied.

The second half saw the Spartans dominating from the start to the end. The warlords only managed 1 point all through the second half. They had missed shots and sloppy rebounds to blame for that.

The Spartans made the first shot with kolade starting from where he left it in the first half. Laolu was not going to allow kolade steal the whole shine as he also made his own shot and was firing up himself. Maro was under the rim, when Laolu's shot came off the rim, to assist it in.

Kolade with a solo drive ran pass two opponents to take a shot that went straight in and a free throw which he undoubtedly made. Laolu was already on fire as he made two concecutive 3-pointers to kill the game. The game ended 19-7. Apparently the warlords were nothing compared to the Spartans

                           GAME 3
                HAWKS VS SPARTANS
This game was one to watch, it's arguably the best game of the day, two big teams with lot of talents to show for it. The game lived up to its hype, however it was a game of two halves. The jump shot was won by Anji and from that point it was a battle of heights and sword.

Bynum leading his other Hawks, made the first basket and two points of the game and in no time the Hawks made the second basket. Laolu tried dribbling pass the Hawks defense but they had him under their wings. He finally made a break through when he tried to shout inside the arc and was fouled, he made 1 of his two throws.

At this point, it was all Laolu disturbing the Hawks, he won two throws for all his troubles, but failed to make the basket on both occasions. The Hawks came all out, this time making the basket twice. With Anji involved this time, the hawks had all the ascendency now as a technical foul was called against Kolade on Favour. He made just 1 of the 3 throws. Going into the break, the Hawks had a 9-1 lead.

The second half started with Spartans thirsty for blood, making several runs in the first minute, buh Anji was having none of it as he made two consecutive blocks before Laolu made the first two point of the 2nd half. Spartans were going all out, Anji had to make another block to set up a counter for Favour and he SLAMMED over Kolade.

Anji was required to block for the fourth time. Maro set up Kolade, who was fouled  and got two throws, he made both. Maro eased the pressure on the Spartans when he scored a rebound. Laolus 3 pointers were coming off the rim, so he decided to run solo. It paid off as he made the basket. Laolu once again at it, he stole from Bynum and made the basket, earning him 2 consecutive 2 pointers.

The Hawks had suddenly given away their 8 point lead and had to do something or else bow to the bloody sword of the Spartans. Quoyum stole twice and set Favour free and on both occasions he dunked. With just a minute to go, Spartans were the one attacking  trying to salvage the game. It ended 15-13 when Laolu made the last basket of the game.

                            GAME 4
                  TITANS VS WARLORDS

Bishop rose highest to win the jump shot. It started quite slow and each team watching and keeping each other at bay. The first real action came when slammy blocked Adonis shot which looked like it was going right in. Bishop had to make his own block to keep the game balanced. After several attempts, mayowa made the first basket of the game.

Another beautiful block from slammy threw mayowa open and he did just enough to make the basket. Warlords responded with a beautiful play which resulted to earning their first points of the game. Titans attacked and made another 2 points, through mayowa. Adonis ran free but missed his dunk. Titans again at it with mayor doing all the finishing and just at the end of things, Dipo(warlord's captain) went for a 3-point shot and it dropped right in. 8-5 the first half ended in the Titan's favour.

Mayor started the 2nd half with the intensity he finished the first with. Slammy also got his opportunity for the Titans as they dominated all area of the court. Slick for the Lords tried to turn things around with his two points Buh mayor wasn't having any of his plans and replied with is own 2-points.

Atine also made 2 2-points shots consecutively before mayor ran through to make the basket for the seventh time in the game making him the only player to make fourteen points in the league. Slammy again made a 2-point shot and on the defense he blocked for the 3rd time, only Anji for the Hawks made more. A late substitution saw Daniel come in for mayor and made the final shot of the day. 24 - 7 it ended, the Titans cursing the WarLords

                            GAME 5
                  TITANS VS SPARTANS

At this point all that was left to be won was the second position and it was going to be an interesting game between this two teams, they had given the table toppers a run for their talents already and were ready to secure the second position.

The first half saw the Spartans  lead 6-5 after a very impressive game from both sides. Kolade and Maro involved for the Spartans. Mayor was replaced by Deji, the game didn't start so well for him. The Titans point were earned by slammy's two point, Hamza's two point and a point from Atine's one point from 3 free throws.

All charged up, mayor came in, in the second half. Laolu made the first point in the second half after a beautiful move. Atine response was superb, slammy made a 2 point, while Olams sent in a shot from outside the arc. Laolu and Kolade made 2 and 3 points respectively. Mayor responded with a 3 pointer. With the last shot inside the arc, Laola leveled it at 15 -15 points a piece.

                           GAME 6
                    HAWKS vs WARLORDS

With the league already won, the Hawks had little to play for. Meanwhile the Lords had to show that they were worthy contestants. It turned out to be a real difficult game for the lords as the class of the Hawks won't allow them settle for something lesser than a win.

The first half ended 9 to 6 in favour of the lords, bishop won everthing for them, from the jump shot to 6 of their 9 points. He was the guys to watch in the first half as he made 3 rebounds, 1 block and 6 points. Dipo registered a two pointer shot while Ochoks made a free throw to sum it up. Quoyum, Bynum and Favour registered a 2 pointer each shot  for the Hawks.

Talent proved to be better than hard work in the second half. Bishop made it 11-6 early in the half and also made a block before anything happened for the Hawks. Bynum lead well with two clean shot, on the defense Anji blocked twice, before Bynum took the lead for the Hawks with a clean 3 pointer shot. Adonis ran free and this time he dunked. It was tied until the very last second when quoyum made a 3-pointer shot for the Hawks extending their lead to 16 - 13 before the whistle saw the match to its end.

                         SUMMARY
After all the games, the Hawks won with 9 points, the Spartans and Titans had four point a piece with a win, draw and a loss each. Unfortunately for the Lords they have no one to be Lord over.

All players that participated in the SUG slam got rewarded with a certificate of participation presented by FUNAAB's director of sport and the FUNAABSU sport sec, Deeman.

The Director of sport encouraged all players and geared them up for the forthcoming NUGA games Southwest qualifiers that would take place in UNILAG next month, telling them to go and excel.

Lots of side attraction came in from the Dj, MC and dancers, even though the male dancers were shy.
Thanks to the MC and a random Funaabite who livened the occasion with his crazy dance moves.
The crowd were treated to a cold cup of chapman.
Other dance performances were from TIMIBLAZE and a group of invited female dancers.
