QUICK SURVEY: WHY STUDENTS DON'T ANSWER QUESTIONS IN LECTURES (FUNAAB)
You know students not answering questions in class is a very common phenomenal issue in all diversities of schools not just in the university. But I've made my survey based in Funaab and from my point of view, some reasons given by people are hilarious and some are serious as well.
So thrill yourselves as I give you the five most general of all the reasons:
1. INFERIORITY COMPLEX:
This is the most common of all the reasons where a student won't want to answer questions thrown by a lecturer. If the student stammers, if the student is shy, if the student belittles himself/herself, if the student is an introvert, if the student basically has a phobia for addressing mass gatherings, the student finds it quite hard to just stand up and give an answer to a lecturer's question.
2. FEAR OF LECTURERS:
There are scenarios where lecturers want answers to always be in their own words not yours or who want the answers to have specific words or "big grammar" over broken down words or where lecturers make fun of you if you get their questions wrong. This sort of events discourage most students, those who got it wrong will never answer questions again and those who see such happen will never want to be jested or belittled like that. Thus, leading to the decision of students to not answer questions asked during lectures.
3. FEAR OF FRIENDS AND PEERS:
Most students believe in having a "rep" (a standard of respect) between their peers or friends or clique. That "rep", the students, believe might drop if they get questions wrong. Another scenario is when the friends of a student don't believe in him/her enough to be able to handle or answer questions and so the morale of the student is spoilt and his/her courage level is dropped.
4. FEAR OF MOCKERY:
There's a common routine I've noticed in my life all through school, if you make a grammatical error or blunder, you get massively mocked by the whole class and this can never be escaped.
This unfortunate though interesting routine got many students having their hearts in their tongues whenever they want to say what's in their mind and only a few are able to pour out their hearts truly.
5. IGNORANCE OF PURPOSE:
Now this is my personal insight. The ignorance of the purpose of learning. The purpose of a student being asked questions is for the student, first and most importantly, to learn and not to assess oneself if he/she can answer or not. If you get a question wrong, you await correction and learn from the correction, nobody is ever above correction.
My conclusion about these matter is in life there's fear and there are jesters, those two factors can weigh one down but they're only superficial and can never be deep, one only gets over them by believing first in oneself and believing in the "can do" phenomenon.
